Q: Many Internet users have been targeted through e-mail messages by criminals claiming to be from their bank. I have an e-mail message that looks like it's from Chase. How can I tell if it's legitimate?

A: Looks can be deceiving. As criminals make more credible forgeries of legitimate e-mail messages and Web sites, you can no longer rely on seeing familiar graphics like the Chase logo. The key to determining the authenticity of e-mail messages lies in the tone of the message and in the nature of the solicitation. Criminals want you to give them information and they're not very subtle about it. Our goal in marketing via e-mail is to inform you about a product or service we think you might be interested in.

It's not our practice to:

  • Send e-mail messages that requires you to enter personal information directly into the message
  • Send e-mail messages threatening to close your account if you do not take the immediate action of providing personal information
  • Send e-mail messages asking you to reply by sending personal information
  • Share your name with any contacts outside our firm in a manner inconsistent with our Privacy Policy

A: If you are suspicious, don't reply to, click on, or enter any information. If it says it's from Chase and you're suspicious, please contact Chase Canada Online Customer Service at 1-877-982-4273. If you entered information about one of your Chase accounts, you should call us immediately. We investigate each incident and take steps to prevent further unauthorized e-mail messages from being sent.
